Human Factors Research for Valve Steam Frame

Industrial Design, Engineering & Human Factors/UX.

Purpose/Objective: Support comfortable, high-performance use of Valve’s Steam Frame VR headset and controllers.

Role(s): I design and run controlled studies on anthropometrics, fit and comfort over time, ergonomics, and task performance, partnering with design and engineering teams. I analyze study data and deliver findings that inform hardware design decisions.

Ergonomic research and evaluations spanned soft goods and fit, including front and rear gaskets and pads, facial interface fit components, strap elasticity and adjustment, top strap length and adjustment, headset angle and IPD adjustment, and cable length. I also contributed to the Steam Frame Ergonomic Accessory Kit, including the top head strap and controller straps.

In the press:

• The Verge called Steam Frame “the most comfortable headset I’ve ever worn,” noting it leaves no mark on the face even after hours of use. (The Verge, Sept 2026)

• Tom’s Hardware praised its lightweight, balanced design, noting the pressure-relieving gasket and rear cradle reduced fatigue over extended sessions, and that the controllers fit nicely in the hand. (Tom’s Hardware, Sept 2026)

Specific methods, data, and designs are confidential.
